Do you pay attention to punctuation? If not, you should in writing!
Here are the most commons ones:
1) The period (.) is used as a sentence ender or after an abbreviation
As a sentence ender: Melissa and Lisa went to the grocery store.
After an abbreviation: His son, Jackson Jr., was born on Nov. 7, 2010.
2) The question mark (?) is used to indicate a direct question when placed at the end of a sentence.
When did Melissa leave for the grocery store?
3) The exclamation point (!) is used when a person wants to express a sudden loud expression or add emphasis.
Within dialogue: "Oh my god!" screamed Jane.
To emphasize a point: My parents' decision made me furious!
4) The comma (,) is used to show a separation of ideas or elements within the structure of a sentence. Additionally, it is used in numbers, dates, and letter writing after the salutation and closing.
Direct address: Thanks so much for your help, Lisa.
Separation of two complete sentences: We went to the shopping mall, and then we went out for dinner.
Separating lists or elements within sentences: Melissa wanted the small, black, and blue skirt.
5) The semicolon (;) is used to connect independent clauses.
