[Confusing Words] Affect VS Effect

  • Change (of plans): The weather affected our weekend picnic.

  • Result (is Sara's sick): The cold weather has really affected Sara's health. She is sick.

  • Impact (our lives): New technologies continue to affect how we live.

More examples of effect:

  • Produce a change in someone: The pollution in the city had a bad effect on me.

  • Produce a change in something: Pollution has a serious effect on the environment.


Tips: Think about which affect/effect = consequence (noun) and which affect/effect = influence (verb).
