Learning English at Home

You don't have to go to school or go to a class to learn something. Yes, teachers help you to learn faster or more efficiently, but don't expect to learn a new language or any skill if you don't want to spend time and effort. You need to find time to practice on your own.

There are many ways you can learn English at home.

If you would like to increase your vocabulary:

  • Read novels or articles

  • Keep a notebook: write down new words from TV shows, movies, or videos (strongly advise you to use English subtitles and not subtitles in your language). Note: Write the phrase or whole sentence. Then, write down your own sentence. - Tips for taking notes: Make a mind map! - TV shows: - Friends - Fresh off the Boat - The Modern Family - Sex and the City - Suits - Movies: - The Hunger Game - Harry Potter (British Accent) - Videos with English subtitles: VoiceTube (I use this all the time with my students!)

  • Use Apps to play games and learn new vocabulary: - Wordmill Games - Words with Friends: play with your friends

  • Email yourself a word everyday: wordnik

If you would like to improve your writing:

  • Find a pen pal to write to: Penpal - What is a penpal? A penpal is a friend who regularly writes you letters. Even though you've never met him, your pen pal may live in another city or country.
