How to Improve your English Listening Skills

🗣👂Tips to improve your English listening🙇‍♂️🙇‍♀️

⚠️If you are having trouble speaking in English, you may need to improve your listening skills FIRST!

Here are some tips for you:

3 tips to improve your English Listening Skills:

1. Listen to English every day: the best way to do that (without spending your free time) is to listen to English during activities that don't require concentration or deep thinking.⏱

  • Start with 15 minutes every day.

  • Turn boring time into listening time

  • You can listen while doing other things, for example: when you are doing the house chores, waiting for the bus, or riding your scooter to work/school.

2. Make it fun and entertaining: watch and listen to media/material you LIKE

  • Watch Youtube videos (that you ENJOY + LIKE)/TV shows/movies🎥🍿

  • Listen to Podcasts with interesting topics

  • Listen to English songs and follow along with the lyrics

Combine English with your interests.

3. Start small in the beginning: start with EASY content🙆‍♀️💬💬, this is so important to create a close relationship between you and English.

  • Watch videos/TV shows/movies with English subtitles

  • Read storybooks/comic books

  • Listen to English songs: help to improve pronunciation and listening skills

Create a habit with English and make a good relationship with it.

However, when you feel like you are not improving anymore. What should you do?

---------> Listen to challenging English material more.

What does "challenging" English material mean?

---------> This means conversations in which you cannot understand every single word or sentence, but you still understand the MAIN IDEA.

Examples of challenging English content:

  • A conversation in which people speak a bit fast (but you can still follow the conversation).

  • A conversation that contains some words and phrases you don't know (but you still understand the main idea).

  • A conversation in which you can understand 80~90% of the content.

Try this if you are an intermediate or advanced English learner!

Once you can understand more English content through listening, you can start to focus on practice English speaking. Check out the post below for ways to sound like a native speaker.
