There are different ways people usually start a conversation:
1. Asking for help:
For work (use formal English): May I ask you to...?
For a favor (be polite!): Don't know how? Check out this article about how to be more polite! >How to ask for help in a store/restaurant?
2. Talk about work (common questions):
How was work today?
How did the meeting go?
How did the presentation go?
3. Romantic relationship:
How's everything with (name of girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife)?
You still seeing (name)? (used for people who are just causally dating, not in a serious relationship yet)
4. Common experiences:
Did you try that taco place across the street from our office?
How was your vacation? I bet the beaches in Maldives was amazing!
I heard you've been to Greece! I'm going there next month. You have any recommendations for accommodation?
5. Hobbies or Interests:
You have a dog too? We should take them to the park together sometime.
Have you read the Lord of the Rings? I love the series.
How often do you exercise?
