[Topic] Coffee Lovers

Updated: Dec 13, 2019

Many of my students enjoy a cup of coffee everyday. I'm a coffee addict myself. What about you?

Learn these coffee words and expressions. You'll have no problem ordering coffee or talking about them with anyone ;)

Need someone to practice with? Message me and let me know!

Types of coffee:

  • Expresso = a shot of coffee made from the expresso machine

  • Americano = espresso + water

  • Latte = espresso + steamed milk + milk foam

  • Cappuccino = espresso + steamed milk + milk foam (more than latte)

  • Mocha = espresso + chocolate syrup + steamed milk + whipped cream

  • Macchiato = espresso + milk foam

Other coffee vocabulary:

  • Caffeine: a chemical / stimulant (= something that makes people more active)

  • Decaf (decaffeinated): coffee that has had most of the caffeine removed

  • House blend coffee: combined with different types of coffee beans

  • Cup sleeve: used for hot beverages; to avoid burning your hands

  • Barista: a person who serves customers in a coffee shop

  • Coffee belt: the region on the map where coffee beans are grown (we talk about it in class, join me or let me know this is something you are interested in class!)

Coffee expressions:

  • I need a cup of coffee to wake me up in the morning.

  • I need my caffeine.

  • I’d like to have a hot house blend coffee please.

  • I’d like to add another shot of espresso please.

  • Do you provide low fat milk? / Do you provide soy milk?

  • May I have a cup sleeve please.

How to order coffee:

  • Barista: Hi! What would you like to order?

  • Melissa: I’ll have a medium latte.

  • Barista: Anything else besides the drink?

  • Melissa: No, that will be all. Can I have low fat milk instead?

  • Barista: Sure. Is that for here or to go?

  • Melissa: To go, please.

  • Barista: Okay. Your total comes to $3.49. May I have your name please? We’ll call your name when your order is ready.

  • Melissa: Ok, my name is Melissa. Thank you!

Time to practice listening:

Listen to the BBC Talk on How do you like your coffee?

  1. What is the talk about?

  2. What are café squatters? Do you think it is wrong being one?

  3. How different are cafes of the 21st century from the very first coffee houses?

  4. How many cups of coffee do we consume in coffee shops or stores in the UK every year?

  5. Has the internet replaced the lively debate and intellectual discussions that used to be their main feature in the past?

  6. What do people do in cafe nowadays? What about you?

  7. What words are new to you? Make your own sentence.

Do you like coffee? Let me know in class and we can have the lesson on ordering coffee or learn about more coffee knowledge!
