Verb Tenses: tell us WHEN an action is taking place
Past Tense: an action that already took place
Present Tense: an action that is happening right now
Future Tense: an action that is going to happen
Past tense:
Simple Past Tense: I surfed at the beach.
Past Perfect Tense: I had surfed before you arrived. (used to describe an action in the past that has been completed)
Past Continuous Tense: I was surfing at the beach. (used to describe an action that is ongoing or continuing in the past.)
Past Perfect Continuous: I had been surfing since I was in high school. (used to indicate an action or event that started before another action or event in the past.)
Present tense:
Simple Present Tense: I surf at the beach everyday.
Present Perfect Tense: I have surfed all morning. (used to describe an action that had begun in the past, continues into the present and has just been completed. Also used to describe an action happened in the past before another action took place.)
Present Continuous Tense: I am surfing right now. (used to describe the continuous nature of an action or event in the present and has not been completed. The activity will be completed in the future.)
Present Perfect Continuous Tense: I have been surfing all day. (used to describe an action or event that has begun in the past and continues into the present. It is also used for an action that began and just finished in the past or where there is no mention of time.)
Future tense:
Simple Future Tense: I will surf after I have lunch. / I shall surf after I have lunch.
Future Perfect Tense: I will have surfed four hours. (used to describe an action that will be completed sometime in the future before another action takes place.)
Future Continuous Tense: I will be surfing at the beach. (used to describe actions that are ongoing or continuing in the future; using ‘-ing’.)
Future Perfect Continuous Tense: I will been surfing for 4 years total at the end of this year. (used to describe an action that is continuing into the future and will be completed at a specified time in the future.)
